Keywords:The Mussel Reef Restoration Trust is a group of scientists, planners, conservationists, recreational fishers, community advocates and business people interested in the potential of restoring the historic mussel reefs of the Firth of Thames and Tamaki Strait.
Mussel reefs once covered much of the seafloor of the inner Hauraki Gulf, providing one of the most productive shallow water ecosystems found around New Zealand.
They were almost completely destroyed by dredging and poaching between 1920 and 1970 and have not recovered naturally.
The trust aims to raise funds for restoration, using knowledge from science and industry to explore how large areas of the Gulf can be returned to productive mussel reefs |
